Aluminum diffusion in zircon

چکیده

Al diffusion under anhydrous 1-atm conditions has been measured in natural zircon. Experiments used a source consisting of AlPO4-ZrSiO4 powder mixtures. were run air crimped Pt capsules. profiles with Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA) using the reaction 27Al(p, γ)28Si. For parallel to c, following Arrhenius relation is determined: D = 6.24 × 103 exp.(−774 ± 34 kJ mol−1 /RT) m2s−1 Diffusivities normal and c are similar, indicating little anisotropy Al. diffuses more rapidly than tetravalent cations that substitute on Si site zircon, but slowly trivalent substituting Zr site. These slow diffusivities indicate chemical signatures will be quite resistant diffusional alteration. example, compositions at center 50 μm radius zircon grains would preserved over times greater age earth temperatures excess 1000 °C.

Atomistic Modeling of Diffusion in Aluminum

We present molecular-dynamics simulations of self-diffusion in Al. In order to facilitate the description of elastic and vibrational properties as well as vacancy migration, an embedded-atom method potential was used in the simulations. This potential was specifically designed to reproduce the T = 0 K equation of state of Al obtained by ab initio total-energy calculations. We show that the temp...

Effects of Aluminum Incorporation in Tobermorite Structure on Chloride Diffusion: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study

In this paper, the effects of different aluminum to silicon ratios in silicate chains of calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) are evaluated on the diffusion coefficient of chloride ions by molecular dynamics method. Tobermorite is a crystalline phase that is used for studying C-S-H properties in nano scale, because of its analogous chemical composition to C-S-H. Aluminum incorporation in C-S-H and...

U and Pu incorporation in zircon and their effect upon helium diffusion in the host lattice

Zircon mineral (ZrSiO4) is a potential host matrix for the encapsulation of highly radioactive materials, such as dismantled weapons and nuclear waste from power stations (Ewing, 2001). We report a detailed computer modelling study, based on interatomic potentials, to address two fundamental issues concerning radiation processes in the zircon mineral: first, the physics and chemistry of U and P...

Enhanced diffusion of Uranium and Thorium linked to crystal plasticity in zircon

The effects of crystal-plasticity on the U-Th-Pb system in zircon is studied by quantitative microstructural and microchemical analysis of a large zircon grain collected from pyroxenite of the Lewisian Complex, Scotland. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) mapping reveals a c.18 degree variation in crystallographic orientation that comprises both a gradual change in orientation and a series...

Heterodyne mixing in diffusion-cooled superconducting aluminum hot- electron bolometers

We present microwave ~30 GHz! measurements on aluminum superconducting hot-electron bolometer ~HEB! mixers. Aluminum HEB mixers have a lower superconducting transition temperature than niobium and niobium nitride devices, and are predicted to have improved sensitivity and require less local oscillator power. The devices studied consist of a narrow superconducting aluminum microbridge with conta...
